“A Day In The Life Of A Software Developer” — Yeah, right.
I’m not entirely sure all of these YouTube videos tell the whole story.
In a somewhat tangential follow-up to a previous article asking if us software engineers had to become a kind of influencer to get a job these days, today we’re going to take a (long and extremely cathartic) look at how the influencer industry is already seeping into the fringes of the grand game of software engineering.
I don’t mean in the way I described previously either with its showcasing of personal GitHub repos, online self-certifications, various coding challenges, or endless hackathon attendances.
There very much seems to be a growth industry in the making of videos about our daily lives detailing what time we get up, what we eat, where we go, but nothing about what we actually do to make a living. They lack any kind of technical content in favour of some glamorous sunlit, almost celebrity style, documentary.
Now, I’m not saying all of them by a long chalk — as I referenced in my previous article, there are some all too real ones out there, but they’re very much in the minority and really quite hard to find.
Nor am I saying they all should include a raft of technical content either as we’re often prevented from sharing the finer details of what we’re doing or even…
