An interesting proposal, but it would put hybrid and/or remote workers at a disadvantage through lower pay for effectively doing the same job.

Additionally this would effectively become a weighting allowance for people working in cities or more expensive areas — if they subsequently moved house or bought a car instead of using the train would their pay change as a result? That’s a rocky road.

At least if it were reimbursed pro rata via direct expenses the employers (and accountancy pen pushers) would have to justify it specifically and, hopefully, they’d call people into the office less as it costs them more.
