As software engineers we should all have our niche, but shouldn't deliberately withhold information for personal gain - that reeks of insecurity and/or hubris.

As said in other comments the fault here, as with most situations of this type, lies squarely at the feet of management.

They didn't tackle obvious problems, and most likely didn't allow time for proper and rigorous documentation - let alone that they allowed the situations to develop in the first place.
