At school my maths teacher repeatedly mentioned that maths requires great creativity, but I never really appreciated what they meant until years later and when I got much deeper into the subject.

There are so many things like that - software engineering included - that are underrated in terms of the creativity and imagination required to not just succeed but have fun doing them.
