Couldn't agree more.

There's an ever increasing expectation, especially in my own industry of software engineering, to be always on, working excessive hours, and going 'beyond expectations' all of the time.

Indeed, performance reviews are even designed to further this abhorrent narrative where average just isn't good enough and won't get you a rise if you continue doing the job you were employed to do in a satisfactory manner.

If you're doing the job correctly, working your hours, and getting satisfactory results - you're doing it right.

Doing any more is unpaid overtime, stress, and leads to rapid burnout. If you're able, move on from the employers that wish to work you this way.
