Taking a short course or bootcamp, at least in my own opinion as a long term software engineer, isn't going to make you an instant developer.

Get the grounding, take time to study, and (as you rightly say) solve actual problems.

For me the best developers are also in the game because they have a love of the subject, they're curious, open minded, and not afraid to ask questions.
