Frankly I find it insulting to be asked to do live coding, or especially 'home based tests' for interview purposes and I turn down every role that asks on principle.

Technical tests to little to gauge actual creativity, knowledge, and experience and for many companies that employ them without understanding them are easily gamed.

Talk to your candidates, and involve other developers in the interview process. Start there.
