I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve had a desk, chair, and computer at the same time on the first day (and either they’ve not been supplied, or I’ve had to ‘borrow’ someone else’s while they were out) as a contractor.

It’s better as a permanent employee, usually, but I think you’re lucky to get something new and in the original packaging — you must have been working for a startup (someone else’s money) or one of the big companies!
