I remember a time when IBM was all about blue suits (during an intern interview for a placement year in my first degree they asked me if I owned a “proper suit”) but I did have a similar experience* — they were interested in aptitude rather than ability.

*They gave a general intelligence test, not a coding test. Unfortunately their location wasn’t great and I just could not bring myself to get that proper suit. Don’t start me on dress codes!
