I see nothing wrong with consciousness emerging from suitable complexity - the universe doesn't need consciousness of any of its evolutionary life forms to exist.

Perhaps when we have suitably complex machines, as I myself believe, consciousness will naturally emerge.

I always like to think that the universe is excellent at destroying itself through ever increasing entropy and the evolution of life is just another inconsequential step to that end. We're nothing special and won't be missed.
