I'm more inclined to think a software engineer actually knows what they're doing if they open vim rather than the dumbed down bells & whistles all singing all dancing 1,000 add-on modules VSC approach.

Especially if they've hooked up syntax highlighting for some esoteric language or auto-completion inside the editor.

Having an editor do all of the work just takes the magic out of the process and stops you looking like a programming wizard :)
