It would be an interesting exercise to see how many people could be removed from a company and still have it operating at, or above, it's current efficiency wouldn't it?

I guess that's what the DOGE idea is all about with respect to the US government.

It can only be, as you rightly say, keeping people occupied (and, perhaps, out of the way) that keeps business like that.
