It's unfortunate that, especially in software engineering, we have to evolve strategies to deal with the rules of a game whose rules weren't made by us and aren't enforced by us.

If only the best strategy were not to play, but how else can we remain ourselves?

Ideally those who brought the game into existence should lay down their arms, come from their trenches, and negotiate.

We won't shoot first, they however most certainly will!
