One reason for me is catharsis, the opening up of the ridiculousness of software engineering that nobody talks openly about but we all experience in the grand game. It's nice to know you're not alone with your compiler (sorry Python people).

Otherwise it's to share thoughts, ideas, try to knit things together and trigger new ideas, to speculate about where we're all going, and why.

Oh, and to leave something behind when I'm gone.
