Return Or Resign? Post-Pandemic Managers Consider Your Office Doctrine!
Will an enforced return to the office lead to a tsunami of resignations in the software engineering workforce?
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Many things have changed over the last year or so in the world of software engineering. It was already easier to remote work, as a software work unit, than in many other professions and forward looking companies had already begun to cast their net wider for better or locally unavailable talent by allowing fully remote employees to join the party.
The current pandemic has already undoubtably accelerated the inevitable move to remote working. With the IT infrastructure now available and the imperative motivation to continue business, this really went pretty seamlessly for the vast majority of companies.
What’s important to realise is that many companies, particularly the most forward thinking ones, began to embrace the benefits of remote working just as much their employees did.
Offices have, where possible, downsized to smaller premises and have thus lowered their overheads such as rent, heating, and lighting. Other have given up city centre locations¹ altogether and relocated to smaller, and vastly cheaper, premises in the suburbs.
