That’s exactly my experience and I’m sure of many other software engineers too — office politics and enforced artificial culture just get in the way.

I never thought of the trade as similar to being an electrician or plumber being called into an office but that’s an excellent example, especially for freelancers. It’s like they exist outside of the ridiculous management chain that software people have to put up with.
