The Era Of Pasta Programming

Throwing it at the wall and seeing what sticks is the new paradigm in the age of co-pilots and chatbots.

It’s always incredibly important to bear in mind that in the Grand Game of Software Engineering there’s never any such thing as a free lunch — both literally and metaphorically.

Metaphorically in that you can’t actually “learn <insert programming language> in 30 days” no matter how many times you read the book, watch the videos on the corresponding YouTube channel, or sit through the presenteeism certificate awarding Udemy courses.

You need to solve real world problems to learn through doing actual work, and sweating all the time you’re doing it.

And literally, of course, in that if it’s a “free” lunch then you probably have to sit through a 3 hour company update meeting combined with a bait and switch HR wellbeing session to get it — and, no surprises, it’s lukewarm, it’s tasteless, and it’s definitely lowest cost thing that the company could buy in bulk and get delivered to a conference room by an intern or permanent fixture.

That said, every now and again a new way to allegedly short cut the system comes up and those who aren’t prepared to sweat it jump on the supposed free lunch bandwagon much to the detriment of the industry as a whole.
