The only time I was ever asked about a suit was when I interviewed for a year’s placement with IBM back in 1989. As a student at the time I’d turned up in (what was my best) black jacket and trousers and everyone, literally everyone, was wearing identical dark blue suits.

After what seemed like an IQ test and a long interview the guy in charge comes out with,

“So, you do actually own a proper suit don’t you?”
