The Ultimate Evolution : Biology or Technology?

As a conscious species is our future with biological or technological evolution and do we actually have a choice?

In a previous article I explored the possibility that in the future, life will ultimately migrate into vast simulations where any perceived scenario may be explored, at will, with little physical cost aside from suitable power and storage.

But, perhaps, there is another route for human evolution and one that eventually may come to halt our own advancement in order that some progeny of ours may go on in our stead.

From Complexity, Consciousness

There is continued debate in the scientific community concerning the nature of consciousness — primarily trying to ascertain what it is and how it comes about.

One avenue of thought is that consciousness is a consequence of the complexity of a system and that a conscious state will naturally emerge from any suitably complex system.

Seemingly supporting evidence on our own planet exists in what are currently understood to be levels of consciousness experienced amongst the animal kingdom. It is observed that as the complexity of a life form increases so does its corresponding level of consciousness. Or more precisely, the complexity of its information processing…
