To me this demonstrates that during interview we, as software engineers, should never ask cookie cutter questions or force coding tests on candidates - it's purely a rote exercise, absolutely devoid of real intelligence.

Much better to have a conversation, seek opinions, and draw up different designs and approaches in a more esoteric way to gauge capacity.
