Why Do Managers Expect Respect?

It’s a bit of a conundrum really how someone in the managerial class automatically assumes that they have ‘authority’ in the workplace. And, as a consequence of that perceived authority, they automatically assume some kind of right to default respect and deference from, for example, us software engineers.
